Position Summary:
The Financial Controller oversees accounting operations for the management company and property-owning entities, including financial reporting, cash management, intercompany accounting, budgeting, and internal controls. This hands-on role works closely with ownership and property management to maintain accurate financial records, strengthen accounting processes, and support the financial performance of the portfolio. The position also manages and develops a small accounting team.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee multi-entity accounting operations, including general ledger, AP, AR, payroll accounting, fixed assets, intercompany transactions, and management fee activity, ensuring accurate and properly segregated records in QuickBooks Desktop. Manage property and lease accounting, including tenant billing, rent escalations, CAM and tax reconciliations, lease data, security deposits, and capitalization of capital and tenant improvement projects. Oversee cash management across entities, including cash flow, operating accounts, mortgage payments, escrow activity, and working capital requirements. Prepare monthly and quarterly financial reporting packages, including P&L, balance sheets, cash flow statements, variance analysis, and lender reporting. Lead annual property budgeting and forecasting in collaboration with ownership and property management; analyze financial performance, trends, and variances to provide actionable insights. Coordinate year-end accounting and tax activities with the external CPA firm, including closing packages, trial balances, supporting schedules, financial statement and tax return reviews, 1099 filings, and audit or tax inquiries. Establish and maintain accounting policies, internal controls, and consistent processes across entities while ensuring compliance with applicable regulations. Optimize QuickBooks and accounting workflows by identifying opportunities for automation, process improvements, and greater efficiency. Manage and develop accounting staff. Support special projects and other financial or accounting initiatives as needed.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance. 7+ years of progressive accounting experience including supervisory responsibilities. Commercial real estate accounting experience strongly preferred. Experience with QuickBooks required.
